OK, it’s about a month late, but still interesting …

Famed Italian chef Lidia Bastianich reveals what she cooked for Pope Benedict XVI during his recent stop in New York City. All the meals were served far away from the cameras, and the menus were never made public. One church official told me (per protocol) that the pope never eats in public, and like HM Queen Elizabeth II, is never seen or photographed while eating.

The good folks over at Serious Eats give us the menus, but surprisingly, it’s heavy on the Italian, and missing are any of Benedict’s native Bavarian morsels.

A sampler:

  • Italian cherry tomatoes with celery and grana Padana alongside some fresh mache
  • Asparagus soup thickened with boiled potato and sautéed asparagus
  • Baked monkfish Sicilian-style with seasoned breadcrumbs
  • Peach fruit tart that, according to Lidia, almost went directly from the oven to the table
