Ian McKellen, the actor who played the wizard Gandalf in the “Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy, is throwing his support behind the openly gay Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire, V. Gene Robinson, according to the Times of London.

The actor will join Robinson at a high-profile event to mark the launch of a new film about homosexuality and the Church on the eve of the Lambeth Conference in July. Lambeth, a decennial gathering of Anglican leaders, including some 800 bishops (not including Robinson, who was not invited) is expected to be a big moment for the Anglican Communion, whose 38 provinces are bitterly divided over homosexuality and the Bible.
