…and the people inside are pretty sick of dealing with the press. Nontheless, reporters can’t get enough of Sen. Barack Obama’s former church, Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

This Time magazine piece seems to portend a power struggle between the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, whose incendiary sermons landed he and his most famous congregant (after Oprah) in hot water, and rising star the Rev. Otis Moss III.

Time says: “According to sources within Trinity, Wright, 66, who began the process of retirement two years ago, is resisting fully relinquishing his duties as senior pastor, hanging on to power in the church he helped build.”

Apparently, Moss doesn’t have the official imprimatur from the UCC to assume full pastorship at the church. At least, that’s what Wright is saying, according to Time.

The Washington Post followed up at Trinity, too, though they give more space to the lingering resentment in the church toward the media.

Speaking of that, Trinty released a blistering response to the Time piece and explained the pastorship situation.

“We joyously anticipate that the (UCC) process will be complete in the early fall of 2008, and that Pastor Moss’ installation will be scheduled as soon as possible thereafter,” Trinity says.
