The nation’s largest Presbyterian denomination will tackle the question of the role of gay and lesbian clergy at its upcoming General Assembly meeting. Delegates from the Presbyterian Church (USA) will meet in California, which is set to allow same-sex marriage, to consider 22 proposals that try to settle-again-whether non-celibate gays and lesbians should have access to church pulpits. Two years ago, the church approved new rules that would essentially let gay candidates bypass laws against gay clergy, but the church’s top court said that policy was unconstitutional. Now the church, after several years of study, is back to square one.
