Buddhists at the Tassajara Zen Monastery, the first Zen monastery established outside of Asia, are blogging about the wildfires raging around their Big Sur compound. The monastery closed after the fires were sparked by lightning June 21.

Appropriately, the blog is called Sitting with Fire. The Buddhist Mag Tricycle reports that they are chanting the “Smokey the Bear Sutra,” written by Dharma Bum Gary Snyder.

There’s also Buddhist parable that compares desire to a burning house, which we must be coaxed to leave, or else perish in the flames.
