San Francisco Archbishop George Niederauer weighs in today on the bitter aftermath of California’s Prop 8, which, depending on who you talk to, either defined marriage as between a man and a woman or took away marriage rights for same-sex couples.

Niederauer worked closely with Mormons (he’s the former bishop of Salt Lake City) and evangelicals to rally support around Prop 8, and in his column issues a call for civility on both sides. Money quote:

“Tolerance, respect, and trust are always two-way streets, and tolerance respect and trust often do not include agreement, or even approval. We need to be able to disagree without being disagreeable. We need to stop talking as if we are experts on the real motives of people with whom we have never even spoken. We need to stop hurling names like “bigot” and “pervert” at each other. And we need to stop it now.”
