There was an interesting exchange between former Sec. of State Madeline Albright and Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., at a congressional hearing on “engaging the Muslim world” last week.

Wicker asked Albright if she agreed with Henry Kissinger’s assertion that an Islamic reformation is needed to foster peace and tolerance among Muslims.

Albright’s answer: I do think that … (but) some of the changes have to come from within Islam, that they have a process whereby there is discussion and debate within the Muslim community. And I do think that it would be — it’s nothing that we can tell them to do.

I don’t think it’s possible for us to tell them, `Have a reformation.’ But I do think that there are those — and I have met many Muslims who see that there needs to be some approach that allows them to have greater debate. But it is not up to us to tell them to do that.
