Sometimes a typo isn’t just a typo.

That’s the case in the Brigham Young University weekend edition of their student newspaper (“The Daily Universe”). It turns out a photo caption from the paper’s coverage of the Mormons’ General Conference referred to Mormon leaders in a picture as the “Quorum of the Twelve Apostates” instead of the “Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.” The mistake survived three proof reads including the editor’s pen.

The newspaper released a statement regarding the matter: “The Daily Universe is a student laboratory, and, while this fact does not excuse the errors of this magnitude, it does mean that we go through a continuous learning and improvement process in order to enhance the quality of what we do. We will of course take whatever steps are necessary to improve that process going forward.”

Moral of the story: Never trust a computer’s automatic spell checker, especially when it comes to religion.
