MOBILE, Ala. (RNS) Republican Roy Moore's forced exit, almost a decade ago, as Alabama's chief justice position over a Ten Commandments monument is barely mentioned as he seeks to reclaim the job. Voters don't ask about it, and the two men running against him never mention it.

  1. Moore didnĀ“t understand the issue. The monument was his personal property, and he had it placed in the building under cover of darkness. Surely he knew that he was in the wrong, because it was sneaked in at night, not brought in properly in the full light of day. At the time, Moore never said he would have allowed the manger to remove it. He tried to turn it into a First Amendment issue, but the fact of the matter was that he sneaked in his own monument without asking permission and with no prior announcement. How quickly people forget.
