Ni cholas Calamusa
Gay marriage is a civil issue, not a catholic sacramental issue.
In fact it is a catholic social justice issue for two gay men to not have
civil benefits denied them as civil spouses.
We all know elderly couples who do not civilly marry in order not
to lose or lessen monetary benefits.
No catholic cleric has ever criticised this practice.
The practice of gay marriage should be considered by the catholic Church
similarly.
Until Catholicisn is willing to be creative in establishing gay sacramental union ceremonies for their gay parishioners, it cannot criticise what the civil society offers the gay and lesbian catholic community.
