“Tamerlan Tsarnaev represents Islam like Fred Phelps represents Christianity.” – The Rev. Susan Russell of All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, Calif., in a Facebook post about the Boston Marathon bombing suspect and the outspoken anti-gay Kansas pastor.

  1. I would modify Rev. Russell’s pithy sound bite to read:

“Tamerlan Tsarnaev represents Islam like The Episcopal Church represents Christianity.”

  2. The Reverend Susan Russell

Honored by the “Quote of the Day” nod. Thanks RNS! MY favorite is from Dr. Maher Hathout: “God does not belong to any religion. All religions belong to God.”

  3. Fred Phelps is an odious person. But who has he slaughtered? Where are the sidewalks strewn with dead people and body parts from bombs that he or those who follow his words detonated? What girls has he killed because they dared to go to school? What young men and women have strapped explosives to their bodies and then destroyed themselves and dozens of others because of his words? Where has he invoked Christ to do any of these things?

Someone who sees this comparison as apt is not thinking.
