(RNS) As the Boy Scouts of America considers whether to change its membership policy to admit gay members, some alternative church-based groups are fielding inquiries from people concerned about the action.

As a former member of the Assemblies of God, I know Royal Rangers means a lot to the AG families whose children are in it, but let’s not make some other child’s orientation such an important issue so as to define Boy Scouts or Royal Rangers as an “alternative.” It’s simply an evangelical scouting organization – it can have its own identity and stand on its own two feet, you know.
