Video: The life of a cardinal

A personal portrait of Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki, who was appointed Archbishop of Berlin in 2011, and later elevated by Pope Benedict XVI to the College of Cardinals.

Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki was appointed archbishop of Berlin in 2011, and later elevated by Pope Benedict XVI to the College of Cardinals.

According to this video, Woelki’s diocese is the second largest in Germany (in terms of area); however, less than 10 percent of the population is Catholic and atheism is deeply rooted as a result of decades of Communist rule.

In order to fulfill his priority of meeting the needs of people in his diocese, he must consider social concerns such as poverty, education and politics.

Woelki does his own laundry, makes his own breakfast, and tries not to forget his “humble background.”
