In a 1960 Lenten procession, Pope John XXIII (top center) leaves the Basilica of St. Lawrence Outside-the-Walls in the San Lorenzo workers' quarter of the city. It was 16 years after his predecessor, Pope Pius XII, comforted the homeless in the area when a World War II air raid resulted in partial destruction to the church and surrounding building.
