(RNS) More than 1,000 shofar blowers set a world record in Whippany, N.J., blasting the instruments in unison for five straight minutes outside the Alex Aidekman Family Jewish Community Campus on Sunday (Sept. 21). The sound of the shofar, or ram’s horn, at the start of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, which begins Wednesday, is intended to pierce Jewish hearts and inspire awe and forgiveness.
