Political demons * Megachurch megaproblems * Godly guilt : Thursday’s Roundup

(RNS) Get ready for more sparks from Colorado politics. You really ought to call your mother more -- even if you're not Jewish or Catholic. And Justin Welby stands up for our beleaguered profession.

So here in our fair city it’s all about navel-gazing and sifting through the winners and losers from Tuesday’s elections. So, in that spirit:

WINNERS

This should be fun to watch: Ousted Navy Chaplain Gordon Klingenschmitt is the newest member of the Colorado House of Representatives.  Right Wing Watch has a compilation of his greatest hits. Hint: He thinks President Obama is possessed by demons.

Evangelical activists, meanwhile, are crediting themselves with the Republican tidal wave that swept Democrats out of office from coast to coast. The only thing, though, is that the numbers in 2014 aren’t much changed from previous years, and there are questions about what happens in 2016.

Intriguing post from political scientist Daniel Bennett: What’s really behind opposition to same-sex marriage? “Christian nationalism”:

Same-sex marriage is about more than morality or ideology. It is about how people view the United States of America.

Props to Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, who joined a London service to commemorate journalists killed in the line of duty:

It is right and essential that in this darkening world we give thanks for those who witness, who light the lamp of truth where it is being snuffed out by so many.

If you’re a Catholic seeking an annulment for a previous marriage, you might be a winner — if Pope Francis carries through on his idea to provide low- or no-cost annulments.

For all you Catholics, Jews and Mormons who think your faith has the corner on guilt — think again. “Protestants, Muslims, atheists and everyone else feel, on average, just as guilty or shameful as Catholics and Jews.”  You should still call your mother more, our own Cathy Lynn Grossman reports.

Does the name Hannah More ring a bell? It should, says Jonathan Merritt.

Shane Claiborne is pretty stoked that evangelical Wheaton College is taking a hard look at the death penalty:

This forum is encouraging because it points beyond itself — to an evangelicalism that looks more like Jesus than the evangelicalism of the past few decades.

And mazel tov to Brianne Nadeau, a PR veteran for a host of Jewish causes, who won her race for the D.C. City Council. Not only did she oust a longtime incumbent last spring in the primary, she ended Tuesday with a whopping 86 percent of the vote.

LOSERS

If you’re a megachurch — say Mars Hill in Seattle — that’s losing your megastar pastor, things could get dicey for you, our own Sarah Pulliam Bailey reports.

Tuesday wasn’t a great day for atheist candidates, but the Rhode Island lawmaker who called teenage atheist activist Jessica Ahlquist “an evil little thing” was tossed out, so there’s that.

Ouch: A New York investigation finds multiple flaws at a water park where a United Methodist pastor was sent careening into a cement wall at the bottom of a water slide. Details here.

The NYT follows our earlier coverage of women who fall in love with priests, especially in Italy. So far, there’s little acknowledgment from the church, or hope for change.

The National Constitution Center tries to make sense of the Supreme Court’s decision this week not to wade into a high-stakes property fight between the Episcopal Church and a breakaway group in Texas.

A hockey coach in British Columbia was fired for posting pro-Nazi propaganda and denying the Holocaust on his Facebook page. Jonathan Turley has the goods.

Today’s awful story: A Christian couple in Pakistan were overrun by a mob and burned alive inside a brick kiln for alleged blasphemy; someone said they saw pages from the Quran in a pile of trash being burned by the husband, Shahzad Masih. It gets worse from there.

And with that, it’s back to work for you and us. Make sure we have your email address below so we can continue sending you the Roundup, for free, every day by email.
