FBI v. MLK * Holidays, Shmolidays * Yoda the Monk: Thursday’s Roundup

The complete text of the FBI's "suicide letter" to Martin Luther King, Jr. No "Francis Effect" in Latin America? More on the comet craze. Another Mrs. Jesus? Puh-leeze!

So there’s a space probe live-tweeting its close-up view of a comet? Amazing. Then again, better than the other way around, no?

Just a reminder to check out Tobin Grant’s column on how “religion shapes views of space exploration.”

And at The Atlantic, Megan Garber weighs in on the religious, or not, themes in the movie “Interstellar.”

Then again, maybe there’s nothing new under the sun?

“You are no clergyman and you know it.”

martin-luther-king-2The New York Times has the complete text of the FBI’s so-called “suicide letter” to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and it’s a stunning thing:

The word “evil” makes six appearances in the text, beginning with an accusation: “You are a colossal fraud and an evil, vicious one at that.” In the paragraphs that follow, the recipient’s alleged lovers get the worst of it. They are described as “filthy dirty evil companions” and “evil playmates,” all engaged in “dirt, filth, evil and moronic talk.” The effect is at once grotesque and hypnotic, an obsessive’s account of carnal rage and personal betrayal.

Huckabee to make another run for president?

The former Arkansas governor and Baptist preacher could take another shot. Yet what doth it profit a man if he gains a candidacy but loses …

Fox News is reevaluating Mike Huckabee’s status with the network following a new report that he is eyeing a 2016 presidential bid.

“We are taking a serious look at Governor Huckabee’s recent activity in the political arena and are evaluating his current status. We plan on meeting with him when he returns from his trip overseas,” Bill Shine, the network’s executive vice president of programming, told POLITICO.

Obama to take executive action on immigration?

Fox News reports that the President has a 10-point plan of actions he can take without congressional approval to reform the immigration system, something Congress hasn’t been able to do.

Republicans will be furious. The Catholic bishops may be pleased. Francis Effect?

Awwwwww….

Church Pop has “Five Rare Photos from Pope Francis’ Childhood.” I mean, this guy even beats out kittens? Whoa.

But Francis can’t stop the Catholic decline in Latin America

So reports Inés San Martín in Crux:

The study [released Thursday] showed that Pope Francis is highly popular in Latin America, with two-thirds or more of the population expressing a positive opinion. However, it also suggests the pope’s appeal has not been enough to stop Catholic losses across the region to Protestants, especially Pentecostalism.

Why do you think they call them “holidays”?

The Board of Ed in Maryland’s Montgomery County is taking some heat for taking Christmas and all other religious holidays off the school calendar. Yeah, that’s leading with your chin. And they are blaming complaints from Muslims. Nice. The days off will remain, but they are saying that’s because they are expecting high absenteeism over those days-that-shall-not-be-named. The Washington Post is all over it.

Click-through bait. And worth it…

Jesus was married! Again … ?

Don’t click-through. Via the Associated Press:

A researcher who has attracted attention and criticism with his revisionist Biblical theories says he has found new evidence that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene, and that early Christians considered her a deity and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…..

If you think of God as “He”…

Then you probably don’t support gay marriage. According to the latest research, as we say…
