(1971) The Rev. Jesse Jackson, national director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's Operation Breadbasket, gives a clenched fist salute from a police van after he and 11 other clergymen were arrested in the building housing the national offices of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company in New York City. Operation Breadbasket was conducting a national campaign against the food chain, which they claim discriminated in the hiring of black employees. A&P denied the charges.
