Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly Listings - July 30
Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly is a production of THIRTEEN in association with WNET.ORG. Visit www.pbs.org/religionandethics for additional information. Show #1348 is fed over PBS at 5pm on Friday, July 30th (check local listings). NOTE: DUE TO PLEDGE PROGRAMMING, Kim Lawton substitutes for anchor Bob Abernethy.
- Faith and the Brain—Correspondent Lucky Severenson explores the field of neurotheology to learn if meditation and prayer have a direct impact on the brain. Traveling to the University of Pennsylvania Center for Spirituality and the Mind, the report showcases the use of imaging technology to scan the part of the brain that's activated when a patient prays or meditate—that is, the frontal lobe, where empathy, focus, compassion and reason reside. Dr. Andrew Newberg of the Center demonstrates his discovery that the way we view God can make a huge difference in how it affects our well being. (originally aired July 17, 2009, show #1246).
- Profile: Father Leo—Web chef: Father Leo Patalinghug believes that the keys to a healthy family are healthful meals, eaten together, and he's sending that message out through his web show, "Grace Before Meals." With 10,000 hits a day, Father Leo is able to share his wisdom and his family-friendly recipes in order to feed his flock—body, mind and soul. With dishes like Fusion Steak Fajitas, Father Leo is winning over his audience with every bite. Kim Lawton visited Father Leo at the Maryland seminary where he teaches future priests. (originally aired September 4, 2009, show #1301).
