FORT WORTH, Texas-The United Methodist Church reopened its ongoing debate over homosexuality on Wednesday, with delegates poised to resist major changes to the church’s policies but taking incremental steps to combat homophobia. Delegates meeting here will consider proposed changes to existing language that declares homosexuality “incompatible with Christian teaching.” Gay rights groups here say they’re satisfied with smaller steps, such as a statement passed Wednesday that opposes anti-gay discrimination in education and homophobia in the church. On Thursday, delegates will likely take up a proposal to ban transgender clergy.
