LifeWay Research, the Southern Baptist Convention statisticians, has found that Americans are almost equally divided over whether homosexual behavior is sinful or not: 48 percent of U.S. adults surveyed believe it is, while 45 think it’s not. Researchers found differences of opinion among people of different faiths: 55 percent of Catholics and 31 percent of Protestants don’t believe gay behavior is sinful, but the percentage drops to 17 percent among Protestants who are born-again, evangelical or fundamentalist.

The results are based on a survey of 1,201 American adults conducted by phone in April.
