Right about now, Tim Russert’s funeral is being held across town at Holy Trinity Catholic Church near Georgetown University. It’s a Jesuit parish, which is fitting since the love between Russert and the Jesuits apparently flowed both ways.

So says our pal Jim Martin, over at America magazine, who proclaims Russert as an honorary Jesuit.

Money quote: The “man for others,” to quote Pedro Arrupe, is an oft-used expression to describe the ideal Jesuit alumnus. … Father Arrupe, the former superior general of the Society of Jesus, meant this is as a real challenge: it was not simply about “being nice” but being a person of self-sacrifice, a person who tried his or her best to emulate Christ.

Russert seemed to embody this ideal in his profession and his personal life. He wasn’t perfect, but he sacrificed and work diligently to serve his country, his family, and his God.
