Invocations and benedictions were heard at the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention, but only one religious leader prayed at the podiums of both – Archbishop Demetrios, leader of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

He prayed for the candidates, urging God in an invocation at the DNC to give “strength and wisdom” to them and at the RNC to grant them “wisdom and courage.”

The archdiocese has posted the invocation from the DNC but, at this point, here’s the “prepared for delivery” invocation at Thursday’s gathering of the RNC, which changed in wording but not substance when he prayed.

Ari Goldman noted in the New York Daily News that Demetrios followed a tradition within his faith. His predecessor, Archbishop Iakovos, was invited by both Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan to the 1980 conventions.
