Some Dallas-area Catholics are upset about letter sent from their bishops over the weekend (read at Mass throughout the archdiocese on Sunday), which they said is overly partisan.

According to DMN: “The letter by Bishop Kevin Farrell of the Diocese of Dallas and Bishop Kevin Vann of the Diocese of Fort Worth says in part: “To vote for a candidate who supports the intrinsic evil of abortion or ‘abortion rights’ when there is a morally acceptable alternative would be to cooperate in the evil – and, therefore, morally impermissible.”

I was personally offended,” Phillip Archer of Dallas told DMN. “My bishop basically told me that if I vote for Barack Obama, I will go to hell.”

It’s worth noting here that the Dallas bishops depart from “Faithful Citizenship,” the USCCB’s primer for Catholic voters, in one significant way. “Faithful Citizenship,” which was approved by some 300 bishops last November, says that Catholics may vote for pols who support abortion rights if there are other grave moral reasons behind their vote. The Dallas bishops reject that caveat in their letter, saying: “There are no `’truly grave moral’ or `proportionate’ reasons, singularly or combined, that could outweigh the millions of human lives that are directly killed by legal abortion each year.”

Protests are likely to be held outside the diocesan headquarters tomorrow, according to DMN.
