We’ve all heard more than enough this election cycle about whether Catholics should, could, will or won’t vote for Barack Obama. Enough already.

When most Catholic bishops have weighed in on this question, they generally talk in general terms, or talk about voters as opposed to candidates. They talk about informed consciences, church teaching, bishops documents, etc., but they rarely invoke a candidate’s name for fear of being seen as overtly partisan (and in trouble with IRS rules.)

Then comes along retired Bishop Rene Gracida of Corpus Christi, Texas. He decided not only to use Barack Obama’s name, but his middle name as well.
