The Religion News Service blog has already noted that Florida megachurch pastor Joel Hunter had President-elect Barack Obama’s ear just hours before his Nov. 4 election when they joined in prayer. Time magazine has added to the coverage, quoting Hunter as saying that Obama “trusts God and the American people and just wanted to commend himself to each.”

Hunter, who gave the closing benediction at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, wouldn’t reveal the contents of the prayer. Obama prayed by telephone with Hunter and the Rev. Otis Moss II of Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland, after arrangements with others (Texas megachurch pastors T.D. Jakes and Kirbyjon Caldwell) to join the prayer-filled conference call did not work out, Time reported.

Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody responded to the news of Hunter’s prayer with Obama with mock horror, noting that “there are probably millions of conservative Christians who have a real problem with Joel Hunter doing this.” But Brody is apparently not in that number: “What’s so wrong with him praying with Obama? Folks, I don’t know about you but I don’t check out someone’s political views before praying with them or for them.”
