The Crystal Cathedral is in the midst of change or, to use the Associated Press’ word – chaos.

The AP reports that the Orange County, Calif., megachurch is having financial trouble and plans to sell more than $65 million worth of property to pay off debt.

Founder Robert H. Schuller, who differed with son Robert A. Schuller over the church’s direction, said in a recent letter that revenue dropped by almost $5 million last year.

The Orange County Register has reported several developments in recent days, such as layoffs of several employees, including the church’s executive pastor; the planned sale of land; and the announcement that a non-Schuller will be the next leader.

“This is a crisis that is either going to crush us or force us into a new path,” said the Rev. Juan Carlos Ortiz, who was appointed in December as the church’s interim senior pastor. “We have chosen the new path.”

The younger Schuller resigned in November after his father announced that his son would no longer be the sole preacher on the church’s “Hour of Power” television program.
