Two weeks after the second affirmative vote for the Rev. Tullian Tchividjian as pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, the fallout continues for the grandson of evangelist Billy Graham:

– About 400 people left the megachurch in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to start a new congregation, which had its second meeting Sunday, reported The Miami Herald and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

– The organist and the director of the traditional music worship service have departed and been hired by the new congregation.

– The church’s 37th annual concert series, which includes Christmas and patriotic events, has been canceled.

– Two elders have resigned, accusing Tchividjian and others of retaliation, a claim church leaders deny.

Tchividjian succeeded the late Rev. D. James Kennedy as pastor and has been criticized for being more contemporary and less political than his predecessor.

The Rev. John Sorenson, president of Evangelism Explosion, a ministry Kennedy started in 1970, was the guest preacher on Sunday for the new congregation. The service was held in a nature park called “Butterfly World.”

He told the Sun-Sentinel that he wishes there could have been reconciliation but he now accepts that there will be two congregations.

“I can see now that it was a work of God,” he said. “These people are joyous, filled with hope.”

Coral Ridge elder Bill Ashcraft also looked ahead when he spoke to The Miami Herald: “The split is not as unhealthy as it seems. It allows two churches to grow and God will still be glorified.”
