Attention Shoppers! For all you neo-feminists out there who don’t think Barbie’s 39-18-33 dimensions are good role models for your little girls, perhaps this will help ease your anxieties in the midst of the Christmas shopping madness: the Barbie Burqa.

Seems one of the museums in Florence is exhibiting 500 Barbies as part of the iconic doll’s 50th birthday, and some of them are shrouded in burqas and chadors. One collector said it’s important for girls to see figures they’d recognize, or “represents them,” which prompted this witty retort in the National Post article:

“I have seen some pretty tawdry advertising campaigns in my time, but I must say this one takes the cake for insensitivity. What’s next in dolls that are “important for girls” to play with? “Illiterate Barbie”? “Forced-Marriage Barbie”?”

And while we’re on the topic of Middle Eastern conceptions of beauty that’s more than skin deep, it appears that the head-honchos at Iranian state TV have told female reporters and anchors that they will no longer be allowed to wear make-up. Apparently it’s a violation of Islamic law.
