LONDON (RNS) Leaders of Britain’s 2.8 million Muslims reacted with horror and anger following Wednesday’s (May 22) slaughter with knives and machetes of an off-duty British soldier in the streets outside the Royal Artillery Barracks in south London.

A statement from the Muslim Council of Britain condemned the slaughter of the soldier by two men – both believed to be Christian converts to Islam – as “a barbaric act that has no basis in Islam and which we condemn unreservedly.”

Abdullah al Andalusi, a spokesman for the Muslim Debate Initiative, which brings together Islamic scholars and researchers in the U.K., said: “These people claimed they killed the soldier in the name of protecting others from UK foreign policy. But if what they claim is true, they have acted no differently from the crimes they claim they wish to see stopped.”

The slain soldier was identified Thursday as 25-year-old Drummer Lee Rigby of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

Every major British newspaper carried graphic photos of one of the suspects, identified as 28-year old Michael Adebolajo, waving a butcher’s cleaver, his hands soaked in blood, following the attack.

Media reports indicate his Nigerian-born parents moved him to London at age 15 to get him away from Islamic fundamentalists; a report in Thursday’s London Evening Standard said that he had been raised as a Christian but had converted to Islam.

“They have done a cowardly, barbaric act,” said Imam Ajmal Masroor of the Islamic Society of Britain. “They have insulted God and Islam. They are low vile scum. We, the British, will remain together resolute and strong.”

Prime Minister David Cameron, who cut short a visit to Paris when he heard the news of the horrendous slaughter, said the nation remains “resolute” in the face of the attacks but also tried to prevent a backlash of anti-Muslim violence that has already resulted in attacks on at least two mosques.

“We will never give in to terrorism in any of its forms,” he said. “This was not just an attack on Britain and on the British way of life. It was also a betrayal of Islam and of the Muslim communities who give so much to this country. There is nothing in Islam that justified this dreadful act.”

A prominent Muslim in the city of Leicester told Religion News Service that he and his community are “extremely worried” about right-wing reaction to the slaughter in London.

“This could fuel the anger of organizations like the English Defence League and the British National Party,” he said, requesting anonymity because he feared for his safety. “The EDL last night had over 250 of its supporters wearing white balaclavas near the scene of the murder. They were shouting anti-Islamic slogans.”

EDL leader Tommy Robinson told reporters: “They’ve cut off one of our army’s (soldier’s) heads in the streets of London. Our next generation are being taught in schools that Islam is a religion of peace. It never has been. What you saw today is Islam.”

  1. I wish disturbed people would stop hiding behind religion and beliefs as a excuse to act out evil crimes, when the truth is that they were sick in the head before they took up a religion and then they use it to blame. If you were of a sound mind you couldn’t and wouldn’t act out such a evil. I think we should just realise that no matter what race or religion or non religion we are all following, there are very evil humans who take advantage of us all to channel their evil and try to push others into influencing young naive people into crime. Just wish all murders had a distinctive mark on them so they would stand out to us all .

The murder of the young man in a British Street was done in the name of Islam and it seems you want to whitewash the whole event with generalisations. There is a fundamental problem within the Muslim community that is enabling their youth, weak minded and as you say sick in the head ones to become these monsters.

Right……But this is an issue as old as recorded history …… “I’m right because my God is REAL you’re god is not ….
therefore you must be punished” for believing in a crappy god.”. When you think about it ,its not even a decent argument

  2. Lots and lots of delusion in this. If Muslims were serious about facing the numerous barbaric attacks in the name of Islam beyond lip service, they would work to expunge hundreds of verses of the Koran such as:

Slay them (non-Muslims) wherever you find them… fight them until there is no more fitna (unbelief), and religion is for Allah. 2:191…

Fighting is prescribed for you, and you dislike it, but it is possible to dislike a thing which is bad for you. 2:216

Let those who fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other, whoever fights in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him we shall bestow a vast reward. 4:74

Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah… 4:76

I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them. 8:12

And fight them until there is no more fitna (unbelief) and religion should only be for Allah. 8:39

Slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captive and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent (convert) and keep up prayer and poor rate, leave their way free to them. 9:5

Fight them, Allah will punish them by your hands and bring them to disgrace. 9:14

Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the last Day, nor hold forbidden which has been forbidden by Allah and his Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of truth, (even if they are) people of the Book (Christians and Jews), until they pay the Jizya (tax for not being Muslim) with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued. 9:29

O You who believe! Fight those of the unbelievers (non-Muslims) who are near you and let them find in you hardness. 9:123

Listen not to the unbelievers, but strive against (jihad) them with the utmost strenuousness. 25:52

Mohammed is the messenger of Allah, and those with him are ruthless against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves. 48:29

Okay… that’s enough evil for now. But there’s more. Lots more.

  3. Muslims condemn savage attack on British soldier! I have received messages and press releases from major and largest Muslim organizations around the world condemning strongly “So merciful on the British soldier”! What about the savage attacks, killings, tortures, rapes, burn alive and using major brutal attacks against Muslims in Afghanistan and other parts of the world mostly against civilians “not soldiers”! Unfortunately, I did not receive a single condemnation from these Muslim organizations. This is what I call “So harsh on the believers”. The opposites of what Allah recommended in the Qur’an. Subhan Allah! What a bunch of Hippocrates! If you have to condemns the attack on one British Soldier I will not complain about that, but my complain is the thousands of Muslims killed by this British soldier and passed without condemnation!

This young man did not kill “thousands” of muslims. He was a drummer – a musician. I was always told 2 wrongs do not make a right. There is no justification for this the koran seems to be a monstrous attempt to counterfeit the Word of God.

      • The false, grievance-laden, predictable diatribe above is fueled by the same Koranic justification quoted by the soldier’s killer:

“We are forced by the Koran, in Sura at-tawba (ch 9), we must fight them as they fight us. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.”

  4. I am glad to see the Muslim leaders in the UK speaking out as decent human belongs and British citizens. But as a person raised Catholic I recoil to hear anyone called scum. Their action was disgusting and in Muslim theology a sign that they have moved away from knowledge of God to the extreme of making themselves enemies of God. Yet repentance for their horrible act is still possible.

The left over thing from Christianity that I often wonder about is: If there really is a God, and that God loves everyone, however sinful, how is that even possible? But then again I’m not God, so I wouldn’t get it.

The woman who talked down the killer until police arrived drew strength from her Christian religion. I find religion praciced by ordinary, kind-hearted people as opposed to most bishops and most reachers is a lovable thing to see.

    • In Muslim theology, the killers’ actions were not a sign of moving away from their god, but rather the perfectly executed jihad injunctions of their guide book. It’s obvious you haven’t read the Koran. You’re applying your learned value system to islam, a system that fits no standard of decency. You recognize that in their ability to hate by calling their own ‘vile scum’.
