Trevor Noah has tweeted some awful things

New "Daily Show" host Trevor Noah was tapped just days ago, but is already caught up in a difficult scenario over offensive tweets.

The question of who would fill John Stewart’s shoes when he announced he was leaving The Daily Show drew a lot of curiosity and even more opinions. Some called for a woman, and there was a push by some folks on Twitter to replace Stewart with Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams. Ultimately, the gig went to Trevor Noah, a comedian who started working on the show this past December.

The decision brought some accolades–a Times profile quotes the president of Comedy Central, Michele Ganeless, saying Noah was “the best person for the job,” and Stewart calling Noah a “tremendous coming.” Many were excited that there would be a man of color on late-night television, a genre that has been predominantly white.

But then the Internet did what the Internet does best: dug through Noah’s Twitter account. Many comedians cross lines and boundaries in their work, but what people have found is more offensive than funny. Some examples:

Plenty of people have pointed out that other comedians have said far worse, which may be true but isn’t an argument for Noah at all. “Other people have been even more offensive and still succeeded” says more about our cultural failings in the past than about how we should conduct business today. The Daily Show is, for better or for worse, a trusted source of news and criticism in our country. The person who holds the seat doesn’t need to be perfect, but he also shouldn’t have built a career on being mean to already-marginalized groups of people. Not only is that abhorrent, it’s unoriginal.
